Carpets from Kashan / Keshan are among the well-known provenances. The city lies on an ancient route of the Silk Road from Turkey via Tehran and on to Yazd towards India. Kashan carpets have been known since the 15th century. At that time, European kings and nobles had carpets delivered from Kashan for their courts. From around 1870, an era of exquisite manufactures such as Dabir and Mohtasham and other excellent weaving workshops began in Kashan. Kashan carpets are known for their use of the finest imported English Manchester wool. From the 1980s onwards, many rugs with Kashan motifs were also made in other places - albeit in often poor quality, which has caused the reputation of Kashan rugs to suffer. In general, old kashan are of high quality and very durable. The usual colors are red, blue, beige and sometimes green. The knot density is usually 250 - 360 thousand knots per m² for large carpets and up to 1 million knots for smaller carpets (e.g. Kashan silk carpets). Common sizes are 5 x 3 ft, 7 x 5 ft, 10 x 7 ft, 12 x 9 ft, 14 x 10 ft and oversizes.
