Isfahan rugs
"Isfahan is half the world". Persian proverb.
The king of Persian carpets is definitely the Isfahan carpet.
Since the desert oasis of Isfahan was made the capital of the Persian Empire under the Safavid Shahs in 1598, the art of carpet weaving began to flourish there in a quality that had not previously been thought possible.
For generations, the art of carpet weaving in Persia has been inextricably linked to the city of Isfahan. The quality of Isfahan carpets is world-leading. The finest knot densities, combined with the finest materials such as Kurk wool and real silk, result in unique masterpieces.
A filigree floral motif is typical of the design of Isfahan carpets. In the center of the inner field, Isfahan rugs often have a star-shaped medallion, reminiscent of the inner dome of a mosque. The four corners of the inner field are often decorated with a contrasting color as well as tendrils, leaves and flowers. Due to the extremely high knot density - often around 1 million knots per square meter - the pattern is pin-sharp. The finest silk is used as the warp thread of the base fabric and as the edging of the pattern elements.
Today there are still carpet manufacturers in Isfahan whose masterpieces are undoubtedly among the finest carpets in the world. Knot densities of up to 2 million knots, the finest cork wool and Persian silk are processed into colorful unique pieces. Typical of Isfahan carpets is a floral pattern, a lavish choice of colors, detailed motif elaboration and accurate execution of the knotting. Well-known manufacturers from Isfahan are Seirafian, Haghigi, Davari, Mehdie and Heghmatneshad
