8x10 Rug (250x300 cm) – the ideal large format for living & dining rooms

An 8x10 rug (250x300 cm, also given as 300x250) is one of the most popular large formats of all: big enough to anchor a full seating area or to sit beneath a dining table with chairs, yet still well-proportioned in most living and dining rooms. At the Djoharian Collection you will find this size as a hand-knotted Persian rug, a robust tribal piece, a modern designer rug or a fine custom order – each one unique.

Buying an 8x10 Rug (250x300 cm) – guidance, scale & selection

The 250 x 300 cm (8x10 ft) format is the classic choice for generous rooms. It ties furniture together, gives a room structure and creates the warm, calm centre that makes a space feel truly inviting. Here are the questions that matter most when choosing one.

What room size suits an 8x10 rug?

As a rule of thumb, leave a visible border of around 30–50 cm (12–20 in) of floor on each side. An 8x10 rug therefore works well from a room size of about 16 to 20 m² (170–215 sq ft) upward. In smaller rooms it can feel overwhelming – in that case a 200x300 or 200x250 format is the better choice.

Which dining table fits a 250x300 cm rug?

In the dining area, size is key to comfort. An 8x10 rug suits medium to large dining tables seating 6 to 8 people. Expert tip: the rug should extend about 60–70 cm (24–28 in) beyond the table edge on all sides – so the chairs stay on the pile even when pulled back and don't catch on the edge.

An 8x10 rug in the living room

In the living room you have two proven options: either all furniture sits fully on the rug (generous, very elegant, needs space), or only the front legs of sofa and armchairs rest on it – which frames the seating area and makes the room feel larger. Both work beautifully at 250x300 cm.

Material & origin – which rugs come in 8x10?

We carry this format in nearly every quality:

  • Hand-knotted Persian rugs – classic, enduring, beautiful for a lifetime.
  • Robust tribal rugs such as Kazak or Bidjar – ideal for busy living and dining areas.
  • Soft Gabbeh in warm natural tones – perfect for relaxed, modern interiors.
  • Modern designer rugs – muted colours and clean fields for contemporary spaces.
  • Ziegler – floral elegance in soft colours, a bestseller in large formats.

8x10, 250x300 or 300x250 – is there a difference?

No. All refer to the same format; the figures simply give width and length in a different order, and 8x10 ft is the imperial equivalent of 250x300 cm. As every hand-knotted rug is unique, the exact dimensions also vary by a few centimetres – normal for genuine handwork, not a flaw.

Care & longevity

A fine wool rug in this format will last for decades. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile is enough day to day; for deep cleaning we recommend professional rug washing. A non-slip underlay protects the rug's foundation and keeps it in place.
