Nepal rugs and Tibetan carpets

Nepal rugs and fine Tibetan carpets

Excellent Nepal carpets in exclusive quality from the roof of the world.

The elegant carpets from Nepal are among the most popular high-end carpets. They have been knotted by Tibetans for many years. The culture of Tibetan rugs came to the neighboring country of Nepal when many Tibetans fled from Tibet after China invaded Tibet. The center of Tibetan rug art is Kathmandu. The classic Tibetan carpet often had religious motifs. Lotus flowers, dragons and tigers could be found on the carpets. These pieces often had the format 6 x 3 ft - it is called Khaden. Such carpets were used as a seat pad or prayer rug. Tiger and dragon carpets were reserved for the nobility and clergy because they symbolized power and influence.

Since the 1970s, the designs have changed and Tibetan rugs have adapted to the demand of Western buyers. The most popular motif was the border carpet with a free, single-colored inner field. The decline of Nepal carpets began in the mid-1990s, as huge quantities of poor-quality Indian Tibetan carpet copies flooded the market - which triggered a drop in prices due to these often inferior carpets. In recent years, the situation has recovered. Suppliers of poor quality have almost completely disappeared from the market. We work exclusively with knotting companies that use excellent wool and produce perfectly crafted works of art. Our Tibetan carpets are often far better made than pieces sold in large markets. We attach great importance to individuality, which is why almost all pieces are knotted to order as a custom carpet in the required size and color. 1200 different colors are available for customization. New Zealand wool, Tibetan wool, bamboo silk, natural silk, jute and hemp are available as pile material. We produce our carpets in 5 knot densities: 60 knots, 80 knots, 100 knots, 150 knots and 200 knots per inch².

How much does a Nepal carpet cost?
The prices of Nepal carpets vary extremely - depending on the quality of the wool, the knot density, the manufacture and the country of origin. Since we are known as a specialist shop for high-quality carpets, we do not carry many cheap qualities in our range. We only offer carpets that are produced sustainably, have excellent wool, are long-lasting and hard-wearing, and are fair trade.

Tufted Nepal rugs
The simplest and cheapest qualities are hand-tufted. When tufting, a machine shoots the wool yarn into a canvas fabric and glues it to the back. This is very quick and very inexpensive wool is usually used for this. Most tufted Nepal carpets are produced in India. Such a carpet costs between 90.00 and 130.00 USD per m² to sell. This is referred to as a hand-made carpet.

Nepal carpet hand loom
Another method of producing simple quality is hand loom. Here, too, no knots are tied in the fabric. Hand loom carpets have a loop in the fabric and are produced partly by machine. They are not durable and the carpets quickly lose their shape during use. Such carpets cost between 110.00 and 160.00 USD per m², and are mostly made in India. Hand loom carpets are also only handmade, not hand-knotted.

Nepal carpets hand-knotted from India

The largest producer of hand-knotted carpets in the Nepal style is India. The qualities and prices vary greatly. Coarse carpets with inferior wool are sold in stores at prices of 80.00 to 160.00 USD per m², finer pieces with good wool cost - depending on the knot density - between 200.00 (60 knots knotted) and 400.00 per m² (100 knots knotted).

Real Nepal carpets
Real Nepal Tibet carpets come - as the name suggests - from the country of Nepal. The knotting tradition came to Nepal with the expulsion of the Tibetan population from the Tibetan highlands. Most of the factories are in the Kathmandu region. Here, too, there are very different qualities and manufacturers. Simple carpets with imported wool in 60 knot quality are available in stores from as little as USD 250.00 per m², but these carpets are quite simple and at best suitable as goods for the carpet departments in furniture stores. Such goods usually come from large producers who serve the mass market. However, there are also some knotting workshops that place great value on quality craftsmanship and the best materials. These are our production partners. Most of our Nepal carpets are much finer with knot densities of 100 to 200 knots per square inch and selected wool. Many designs are also made with high-quality silk.
