Description

Yahyali, Turkey · Vintage circa 1970 · Item No. 14343

Vintage Yahyali rug 206 x 119 cm – all-wool construction

This hand-knotted Turkish rug from Yahyali dates from circa 1970. An elongated, stepped medallion in red and cream stands on a blue ground, surrounded by richly patterned borders. Made entirely from wool, this individual vintage piece is in very good condition, with small restored areas of re-knotting.

Stepped medallion and multiple patterned borders

An elongated red medallion defines the centre. Within it lies a cream-coloured serrated form containing a smaller multicoloured central motif. Dark outlines emphasise the steps and hooks of the geometric drawing. Small ornaments enrich the blue ground and corner areas.

Several borders frame the narrow field. Yellow and ochre tones, red, blue and dark accents alternate in densely arranged geometric motifs. Light areas within the medallion and narrow framing bands provide a clear contrast to the strong colours.

Traditional hand-knotting and vintage condition

The pile, warp and weft are all wool. An approximately 12 mm pile height gives the rug a pleasantly soft surface. This vintage rug is in very good condition. Small restorations involving re-knotting form part of its documented condition. Its slightly irregular shape reflects its handmade character.

Placement and interior styling

The elongated size of 206 x 119 cm, approximately 6 ft 9 in x 3 ft 11 in, suits a spacious hallway, a bedside position or an accent in front of a sofa or armchair. Red, blue and warm ochre tones complement wood, leather and light textiles. The clearly defined medallion is best appreciated when the centre of the rug remains visible.
