Ersari Afghan rugs are made by the people of the Turkomans in the steppes of Asia Minor. The settlement area of the Turkmens includes Iran, Afghansitan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. There are 10 tribes of the Turkmen - whose carpets are named after their names: Salor, Saryk, Tekke, Chodor, Arabatchi, Imreli, Yomud, Erzari, Bokhara (Bukhara = main trading place of carpets). Often, all carpets with a red base color and pattern have been referred to as Bokhara carpets for the sake of simplicity. Although the pattern design is always similar, there are very large differences in knotting and knot density.
This carpet was made in the border area in northern Afghanistan, the Ersari live in the steppe between Merv in the west, Mazar I Sharif in the southeast and Bochara in the north. Typich are the large motifs, called Gul or Gül, and in relation to the infield above-average borders. Ersari Gül are almost always octagonal and retaltive close to a square shape.
