Loribaft Rug Vegetable Dyes 100 x 150 cm (3.3 x 4.9 ft) – Wool, New
Hand-knotted Loribaft from southwest Iran, made with vegetable dyes on hand-spun wool. Blue field with a mirrored drawing and a vivid orange main border. A Persian rug from the Gabbeh family, new and unused.
Pattern and Colour
The field stands on a deep, softly clouded blue and carries a strictly mirrored drawing. Two slender little trees of strung diamonds stand on the central axis, between them a pair of curving beige flower stems whose ends open into blossoms. Diagonal sprigs of small stars and dots in ivory and yellow run into the field from the corners.
At the four corners sit stepped, hooked forms in orange and green, as found in the Caucasian-influenced vocabulary of southern Persia. A small ivory cypress closes the central axis at top and bottom. The drawing is unusually detailed for a Loribaft – most pieces of this group keep to a few scattered motifs.
The broad main border stands on vivid orange and carries a row of single blossoms in ivory and dark blue. Narrow sage-green guard borders with a zigzag band accompany it on both sides. The contrast between the cool blue field and the warm border band carries the rug.
Wool, Colour and Making
Loribaft is the finer variant within the Gabbeh family: more densely knotted than a classic Gabbeh, but with the same soft, upright pile. The wool is hand-spun and comes from flocks in the highlands of the Zagros mountains. Hand-spun yarn is less even than machine-spun yarn, takes the dye to varying depths and gives the lively, slightly clouded surface that distinguishes this rug.
All colours are vegetable dyes. The rug comes from the production of Lori families who have settled and knot in fixed workshops, not on migration. That explains the clean right angles and the even pile height of about 12 mm (0.5 in), with the hand still clearly visible.
Where It Fits
At 96 × 147 cm (3.1 × 4.8 ft, 1.41 m²), the rug suits the following situations:
Bedroom: as a bedside rug, where the soft pile is especially pleasant
Entrance hall: in front of the door or beneath a coat stand
Living room: as a splash of colour beside an armchair or in front of a shelf
Children's room: soft to the touch, with cheerful, clear colours
Care, Cleaning and Repair: Vacuum regularly in the direction of the pile without a rotating brush; blot stains rather than rubbing them. No dry cleaning. For deep cleaning and for work on fringes, edges or pile, we offer our own rug wash and rug repair.
