Hand-knotted rug from Nepal in cut-loop structure. Chequerboard design of cut pile and closed loops, tone on tone in tan. Tibetan highland wool, 100 knots. New and unused.
Pattern and Structure
The surface is divided into a chequerboard grid: square fields of smooth pile alternate with fields built from fine parallel lines. The orientation of these lines shifts from square to square between horizontal and vertical, setting the grid in motion without introducing a second colour.
The effect comes entirely from the cut-loop technique: part of the wool loops are cut open during weaving while others stay closed. Cut pile absorbs light and reads matt, closed loops reflect it and stand brighter. Depending on viewing angle and daylight the relationship reverses – the pattern shifts rather than staying fixed.
The colour is a warm, muted tan with no second shade beside it. There is no border, no frame and no centre: the structure runs through to the edges. This makes the rug a quiet surface that does not compete with existing furniture and colours.
Material and Weave
The rug is made from Tibetan highland wool, from sheep kept at high altitude. It has a long staple and high natural lanolin content, which makes the pile soft and helps it resist soiling. The density is 100 knots per inch², equivalent to around 155,000 knots per m² – the standard quality for Nepal rugs of this class. At a pile height of about 8 mm the cut-loop structure stays clearly readable without making the surface restless. The weaving follows the Tibetan method over a metal rod, which gives the characteristically even construction.

At 156 × 259 cm (4.04 m², approx. 5.1 × 8.5 ft) the rug suits the following situations:
Living room: under the coffee table, with the front legs of the seating on the rug
Bedroom: lengthwise at the foot of the bed, or at the side for beds up to 180 cm wide

Care, cleaning and repair: Vacuum regularly in the direction of the pile, without a rotating brush. Blot spills rather than rubbing them. On cut-loop structures avoid brush attachments, which can pull the loops. The rug is suitable for use over underfloor heating.
