Rugs by Provenance
A rug's name is almost always a place name. Bidjar, Tabriz, Isfahan – these are towns and regions in Iran, and the name carries a whole weaving tradition with it: a particular construction, a way with materials, a language of form worked out over generations. Knowing the provenance tells you a good deal about a rug before you have seen it.
A Bidjar is dense and heavy, built to last. An Isfahan carries fine knotting on a silk warp and a fully composed design. Nomadic weavings such as Qashqai or Beluch are made without a cartoon and live on their irregularity. Moroccan Berber rugs work with few colours and open fields.
We carry over thirty provenances – classical Persian as well as Anatolian, Caucasian, Afghan, Moroccan and Nepalese, alongside modern design weavings. If a name means nothing to you yet, browsing by size or by room is the quicker route; you can always narrow down the origin afterwards.
