What is an Afshari rug?
Afshari or Afshar rugs belong to the semi or semi-nomadic carpets. Originally from the Caucasus, the nomadic tribe settled in Persia long ago. Afsharen live today in Kurdistan around the city of Bijar and for the most part in south-eastern Persia in the Kerman region. The main trading centers where the weavers offer their carpets for resale are the cities of Kirman and Sirjan. Afshari carpets are usually available in large bridge format - i.e. between 170 x 120 cm and 240 x 170 cm. The pile is made of wool, the base fabric is made of cotton.
The patterns reflect the living environment of the people - trees of life, animals and stylized people are often found as motifs. The typical colors are blue, red and ivory. The knot density is between 90,000 and 250,000 knots m².
