What is a Ziegler carpet?
Ziegler rugs have their origins in ancient Persia.
They are named after the Anglo-Swiss company Ziegler & Co. based in Manchester, England. From the mid-1880s it was a producer and dealer for rugs and carpets from Persia and had production facilities in the Azerbaijan / Tabriz region, Sarouk Sultanabad (today Arak) and Mahal. In contrast to the more colorful carpets from previous eras, Ziegler rugs were made in softer and often lighter tones. The knot density was medium fine and the wool quality was very good. Today, original pre 1900 Ziegler carpets are sought-after and high-priced collector items.
Ziegler designed rugs are currently knotted in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India and are sold under the following names: Ziegler Carpet, Ziegler Farahan, Ziegler Mahal, Ziegler Khorjin and Ziegler Arijana. The designs are often based on the originals, the colors are often reduced to a few shades within a carpet. This creates rugs with quiet elegance, which are ideal as a decorative but calm design element in a modern interior design. In addition to motifs from Farahan, Mahal and Sultanabad, Oushak and Khotan motifs are also used in modern Ziegler carpets.
High-quality virgin sheep's wool is used as the base material for the rug pile. This comes from both the region (Ghanzi wool) and New Zealand. In higher quality products, the color pigments are of natural origin (vegetable colors). Typical colors for Ziegler carpets are beige, red, gray, blue, black and green. A special wash gives the carpets a slight vintage look and a subtle shine. Coarser and cheaper Ziegler carpets are often referred to as Chubi Ziegler, finer and finest Ziegler carpets as Ariana or Aryana / Arijana Ziegler carpet.
Ziegler carpets are knotted in many formats. such as 5 x 3 ft, 6 x 4 ft, 7 x 5 ft,, 8 x 6 ft, 10 x 7 ft, 10 x 8 ft, 11 x 8 ft, 9 x 12 ft, 13 x 10 ft. Our customers in the USA and Great Britain are more often looking for oversizes like 15 x 12 ft, 16 x 13 ft, 17 x 12 ft, 18 x 13 ft. We have stock available up tp 25 x 22 ft and 28 x 14 ft.
