What is a Ziegler rug? Ziegler rugs originated in late 19th-century Persia. They were named after the Anglo-Swiss company Ziegler & Co., based in Manchester, which operated its own looms in regions such as Tabriz, Sultanabad (Arak), and Mahal starting in 1883. Unlike the more vibrant oriental rugs of previous eras, Ziegler carpets are characterized by softer, muted colors and a more understated aesthetic.
Today, high-quality Ziegler rugs are knotted in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. The Djoharian Collection features various quality levels and designs, including Ziegler Farahan, Mahal, Khorjin, and the exceptionally fine Aryana / Arijana Ziegler rugs. With their reduced color palettes and motifs inspired by Oushak and Khotan traditions, they perfectly complement modern, upscale interiors as a sophisticated design element.
For the pile of our Ziegler rugs, we exclusively use high-quality hand-spun wool (e.g., Ghazni wool or New Zealand wool). Premium qualities are dyed with vegetable dyes (natural dyes). A specialized washing process gives the rugs a subtle sheen and an authentic vintage look. Typical colors include beige, grey, blue, sage green, classic red, and charcoal.
