Gabbeh carpets of the Gashgai and Bakhtiari nomads
Gabbeh is the name given to hand-knotted carpets from southwestern Iran. Gabbeh rugs became well-known in the early 1990s, when larger quantities of these rustic rugs reached Europe for the first time. At that time, the family company Zollanvari from the city of Shiraz was in charge.
Gabbeh carpets are - depending on the region of manufacture - quite different, but always have some typical characteristics. Gabbehs typically have a coarse knot density and a high pile that is made of soft, handspun wool. The dyes are of natural origin. The motifs are graphic and abstract. Animals and people are often tied into the patterns in greatly modified form.
Old Gabbehs are sought-after collector's items and are hardly available anymore. Many Gabbhes from production after 1990 are still of very good quality and can be found on the market. Due to the high demand, carpets with Gabbeh motifs in many different price ranges were already being knotted in India in the mid-1990s.
