Information about Bachtiar rugs / Bachtiari carpets - Djoharian Collection
Bachtiari carpets are knotted by the nomadic tribe of the same name, the Bachtiar (also Bakhtiar) in southwestern Iran. Various motifs such as medallion, panels, tree of life and paradise garden are typical. The colors are often of mineral or vegetable origin, sometimes you will find carpets with a combination of natural and chemical dyes.
The knot density starts at approx. 60 kpsi, finer pieces can have up to 400 kpsi. Antique Bakhtiari carpets often have a warp and wool foundation and a pile of wool, newer pieces usually have a warp thread made of cotton, a weft thread either made of cotton or wool, the pile consists of wool. Old Bachtiari rugs impress with their enormous luminosity of colors and the appealing design language. The production area of the Bachtiari carpets includes many small towns with regional characteristics in the motif and the production method of the carpets. The main transshipment points are the cities of Shah-Re-Cord, Chahar Mahal and the nearby Isfahan.
Bachtiari carpets are usually knotted in the formats 5 x 3 ft, 4 x 6 ft, 7 x 5 ft, 8 x 6 ft, 10 x 5 ft, 10 x 7 ft, 9 x 12 ft.
Bakhtiari carpets larger than 13 x 10 ft are less common.
