Kiz Bergama carpets from western Anatolia.
In western Turkey, about 50 km north of Izmir, lies the small town of Bergama, formerly known as Pergamon.
Historically there is a lot to tell about this region. In the 3rd and 2nd centuries v. BC Pergamon was the capital of the Pergamenian Empire, which extended over large parts of western Asia Minor. The city was also one of the most important suppliers of the precursor of paper - parchment made from goat skin. Many antique rugs in museums of the world have their origin in this area.
