Bidjar Garus Rug 267 x 132 cm 9 x 4.3 ft – Vintage Persian Gallery Runner 11227

Pattern and Colour

At the centre of the red field sits a stepped ivory medallion whose core carries a dark blue star with a light rosette. On both sides it extends into slender, elongated pendants that stand freely on the open ground. At the ends, ivory spandrels repeat the blossoms and dark blue areas.

The red ground is set with scattered motifs: rosettes, serrated flower stars, curved leaves and small hooked forms in blue, ivory, orange and green. Their distribution follows no rigid grid but moves freely across the surface. The red shows a gentle depth of colour that shifts along the length – a sign of hand-dyed wool from separate dye lots.

The main border also stands on red and carries rosettes, stars and feathered sprays in ivory, blue and orange. Towards the field it is separated by a narrow khaki stripe with a zigzag band, and on the outside by a dark blue band with a red and white zigzag. The dark outer edge clearly gathers the strong red of field and border.

Garus, Bidjar and the Firm Construction

Garus is the name of the district in Kurdistan province whose main town is Bidjar; in the trade, “Bidjar Garus” describes pieces from this area. Bidjar rugs are known for their exceptionally firm construction: the wefts are beaten down hard during knotting, producing a heavy, barely flexible fabric. Collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia”. This piece is knotted with the symmetric knot on a cotton warp, at around 120,000 to 160,000 knots per m² (approx. 77–103 kpsi), with a pile of about 10 mm (0.4 in). Fringes and edges are intact, and the rug is freshly washed.

Where It Fits

At 132 × 267 cm (4.3 × 8.8 ft, 3.52 m²), the rug suits the following situations:

• Hallway and entrance: in corridors from 160 cm (5.2 ft) wide, also along the full length of a landing
• Living room: lengthwise in front of the sofa or as a zoning rug beside the seating
• Bedroom: alongside the bed or across its foot
• Study and library: in front of bookshelves or beneath a reading chair
