The Same Komon Collection: Shogun Tradition meets Modern Japandi Design
A textile journey from the Edo era to the modern age: The Same Komon design merges Japanese protective symbolism with masterfully hand-knotted Nepalese craftsmanship and finest silk.
Historical Roots: The Seal of the Tokugawa
The Same Komon (鮫小紋 – "Sharkskin Pattern") is far more than a decorative element; it is a piece of Japanese history. During the Edo period (1603–1868), this highly complex design was the official and exclusive pattern of the Kishū-Tokugawa family, one of Japan's most powerful clans, which produced the famous Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune.
The tiny dots, arranged in precise, overlapping arcs, mimic the resilient skin of a shark. In Japanese symbolism, this represents protection and invincibility. Warriors and aristocrats wore this pattern as a talisman to ward off misfortune, disease, and negative energies. It embodies the ideal of Iki – an aesthetic of "refined restraint." A rug in this design appears from a distance as a calm, monochrome surface, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a fascinating mathematical depth.
Modern Japandi Design & Material Brilliance
Djoharian Design translates this venerable tradition into the world of Japandi Design – where Scandinavian clarity meets the spiritual warmth of Japan. To fully capture the brilliance of this pattern, we use a significant amount of finest Chinese silk in the pile alongside premium wool. The silk reflects light selectively, making the Same pattern appear vibrant and three-dimensional depending on the viewing angle.
Dyeing Techniques & Customization
The visual impact can be significantly influenced by the choice of dyeing:
• Solid Dyeing: Creates a perfectly uniform color and architecturally sharp definition of the dots – ideal for purist interiors.
• Abrash Dyeing: The yarn is intentionally shaded in nuances. This creates an organic, almost antique patina and gives the rug a natural vitality.
