Kohinoor Nadir: Silver and Gold on Black
Cloud bands in silver, octagons in gold, deep black in between: Kohinoor Nadir is a modern silk rug that rises from its surface. Its name recalls Nader Shah, the Persian ruler who marched into India in 1739 and carried the Koh-i-Noor back to Persia. According to tradition, it was he who gave the diamond its name, "Mountain of Light". With 85% silk, this black silk rug is the silkiest piece in our Kohinoor collection, hand-knotted in Nepal, in stock at 180 x 120 cm (6 x 4 ft) and available to order in almost any size.
The Design: Clouds, Jewels and Ornaments
The inner field is traversed by intertwining silver-grey cloud bands, a motif from Tibetan and Chinese art where it stands for good fortune and infinity. Set within them, golden octagons with rust-brown cross motifs and four-petalled blossoms glow like jewels in a setting. A narrow golden border frames the field, and the wide outer border takes up the octagons and blossoms again in a rhythmic sequence. An olive-gold edge finishes the rug.
3D Carving: Silk That Rises
What makes Kohinoor Nadir special is its surface. During shearing, the black wool ground is kept short while the silk motifs are left slightly higher. The result is a relief in which every ornament stands out sculpturally from the ground. In the light the silk gleams while the matte wool recedes into the depth, and depending on the angle the silver shifts between pale pearl grey and warm taupe.
The rug is hand-knotted in our finest "Executive" quality in Nepal, not tufted and not handloomed, but knot by knot by hand.
Expert Tip for Your Home
At 180 x 120 cm (6 x 4 ft), Kohinoor Nadir is a precious accent: beside the bed in the bedroom, in front of the desk in the study, or as a welcome in the entryway. And because a silk rug of this quality is a work of art, it also looks magnificent on the wall. The black with silver and gold suits dark wood, brass and velvet as well as a clear, modern interior in white and grey. More rugs in this size: 6 x 4 ft rugs.
