Kirman rugs, also called Kerman (Persian: کرمان), have typical traditional designs that complement many interior styles, such as European, Mediterranean, vintage, and mid-century. The traditional colors are red/beige, green, and dark blue.
The origin of Kirman rugs lies in the Orient, in the Persian city of Kerman in southeastern Iran. Kerman is an ancient caravan city on the Silk Road in Iran and is located near the Dasht-e Lut Desert. The Lut Desert, or Lut for short, is the largest desert in Iran, covering 166,000 km². Typical of Kerman carpets is a floral, intricate pattern with blossoms and vines centered around a central medallion. Kerman carpets have been very popular since the late 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, large carpets in pastel colors and with a so-called mirror pattern were produced for the US market. These elegant carpets are still sought after and fit well into contemporary interiors.
