Carpets from Kashan / Keshan are among the well-known provenances. The city is located on an old Silk Road route from Turkey via Tehran and on to Yazd towards India. Kashan carpets have been known since the 15th century. European kings and nobles had carpets from Kashan supplied for their farms. Beginning around 1870, Kashan began an era of exquisite manufactories such as Dabir and Mohtasham, as well as other excellent weaving mills. Kashan carpets are known for using the finest imported English Manchaster wool. From the 1980s onwards, many carpets with Kashan motifs were also produced in other places - but in often low quality, which has damaged the reputation of the Kashan carpets. In general, old Kashan are of high quality and very durable. The usual colours are red, blue, beige and sometimes green. The knot density is usually 250 - 360 tsd knots per m2 for large carpets and up to 1 million knots for smaller carpets (e.g. Kashan silk carpets). Common sizes are 150 x 100 cm, 200 x 130 cm, 300 x 200 cm, 350 x 250 cm, 400 x 300 cm and oversizes.
