Kirman have their origins in ancient Persia. It is named after the city of Kirman in the province of the same name in southwest Persia. It is also the main trading point for many carpets from the region. Kirman carpets also include carpets from Ravar / Lavar and carpets from the northern oasis town of Yazd.
Kirman carpets are characterized by lush decor and rich, floral patterns. Typical of carpets from Yazd is the firmer feel compared to other carpets from the Kirman Group. The colors are often richer and the wool is softer. Around 1900, strong demand for Kirman, Yazd and Ravar carpets began among wealthy buyers in Europe and the USA, as very large looms were available at the time and carpets were produced for kings, nobility and the wealthy middle class. These antique carpets are still very popular today. Large suppliers from New York and London still offer period pieces for prices in the six-figure range.
